GHD has appointed Paul Nathanail as Technical Director – Contaminated Land, effective from 1 July 2020, as it continues to strengthen and grow its portfolio of environmental consultancy services across the EMEA region.

This strategic appointment will help expand GHD’s offering in the contamination, assessment and remediation (CAR) service line to include client-side advisory and expert witness capabilities, in addition to the company’s existing site investigation and assessment services.

Paul is one of the world’s leading contaminated land management specialists, with over 30 years’ experience in environmental consultancy, innovation and expert witness. He is currently Chair of the National Brownfield Forum, Honorary Research Associate at the British Geological Survey and Deputy Chair of SiLC Register Ltd. Paul is also the Suitably Qualified Person auditing the soil contamination checks around Grenfell Tower.

Paul joins GHD from Land Quality Management, where he had been a Managing Director since 1997. He has also previously served as Professor of Engineering Geology at the University of Nottingham from 2007 to 2018, Principal Lecturer at Nottingham Trent University from 1994 to 1998, and Principal Geoscientist at George Wimpey plc from 1987 to 1994.

Paul holds a number of academic degrees, including a PhD and MSc in Engineering Geology from Imperial College London and a Bachelors in Earth Sciences from the University of Cambridge. He has contributed to over 100 scientific papers, technical books and guidance documents, including research into emerging contaminants perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Senior Environmental Scientist Dr. Andrew Gillet and Lead Environmental Scientist Dr. Richard Ogden have also joined GHD from Land Quality Management alongside Paul. Andrew has over 30 years’ experience in contaminated land, soil, hydrogeology, environmental remediation, and environmental consulting, with a specialism in delivering training courses across a range of technical subjects, including software programs such as geographical information systems and risk assessment and modelling tools. Richard is an experienced technical specialist with a broad understanding of land contamination risk assessment and remediation, in addition to waste treatment technologies and practices. He has over 20 years’ experience in research institutions, blue-chip multinationals and specialist consultancies, and is a Practitioner Member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (PIEMA).

Commenting on the appointments, Tom Foley, Regional General Manager, UK, at GHD, said: “We are delighted to have three such experienced and respected land contamination specialists join us at GHD. Sustainability has become a priority for governments, businesses and society globally, and we are committed to providing our clients with a broad and expansive range of environmental consultancy services that will benefit the communities in which they operate. Paul’s research and consultancy practices span, and have impacted, the full spectrum of risk-based contaminated land management and sustainable urban regeneration, and I have no doubt that he will be a great asset to GHD and our clients, as will both Andrew and Richard.”

Paul Nathanail, newly appointed Technical Director – Contaminated Land at GHD, added: “I am very excited to be taking on this new role in GHD at a time when intelligent environmental stewardship has never been so important. I look forward to joining my new colleagues and bringing together a world class team to help clients manage land contamination risks sustainably, while improving the ecosystem from redeveloped brownfield sites across the UK, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.”
