High Court Judge Appointment (Queen’s Bench Division): Spencer
The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of Martin Benedict Spencer QC to be a Justice of the High Court with effect from 2 October 2017 consequential to the death of Dame Frances Patterson.
The Lord Chief Justice will assign Martin Benedict Spencer to the Queen’s Bench Division.
Martin Benedict Spencer, aged 61, will be known as The Honourable Mr Justice Martin Spencer. He was called to the Bar (I) in 1979 and took Silk in 2003. He was appointed as a Recorder in 2001 and authorised to sit as a Deputy High Court Judge in 2017.
Dame Frances Patterson was appointed to the High Court Bench, assigned to the Queen’s Bench Division, in 2013 after a distinguished career at the Bar, where she specialised in planning, environmental and public law. She took silk in 1998, and in 2004 became Head of King’s Chambers in Manchester and Leeds. She was made a Bencher of Middle Temple in 2005, and a Deputy High Court Judge in 2008. She was appointed Public Law Commissioner at the Law Commission for England and Wales in 2010. In 2012 she was given an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Leicester, the University from which she had graduated in History.
