I am a consultant ophthalmologist currently working part-time as an ad hoc locum consultant for the Great Western Hospital, Swindon, NHSFT. I was a consultant ophthalmologist at the Royal United Hospital, Bath, between 1974 and 2000 and an honorary consultant ophthalmologist at the RUH from 2000 to 2016. I was a Senior Examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists from 1994 - 1999. I have prepared more than 500 ophthalmic medico-legal reports relating to eye injuries, eye disorders and clinical negligence. I also accept instructions in criminal cases. I am happy to be involved in mediation.
I do not accept cases involving shaken baby syndrome and laser refractive surgery outcomes.
I have attended instruction courses in medical report writing and giving expert evidence in court. Of my last 500 reports, 51% related to personal injury, 42% clinical negligence, 5% criminal, 2% various (Will dispute, GMC, DVLA and product liability). Claimant / defendant split for all categories: 76% claimant, 17% defendant, 7% joint instructions. Court appearances are rare: I attended courts as an expert witness in January 2009 and November 2012. I have taken part in 4 NHS Independent Reviews as an outside professional expert for NHS Trusts in the South West and Southern Regions and in Wales.
