Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist and Intensive Care Specialist from 1982 to 2017, whose clinical work involved providing anaesthesia for adult patients undergoing Cardiothoracic Surgery, managing patients in the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit and also the evaluation, selection and management of medical equipment and medical devices in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, which last responsibility reflects a life long interest in the application of machines in medicine. Research interests and peer review publications cover theses fields.
Recognised as a Medico-legal Expert in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care by the Legal Aid Boards of Scotland (since 1988) and England & Wales (1994), the Scottish Health Service Central Legal Office since 1990, the Irish Courts of Justice since 1985 and The Expert Witness Institute since 1997, he has an average of 12 new referrals per year, most of which settle.
Awarded a Pask Certificate of Honour in 2009 by the Association of Anaesthetists, in recognition of distinguised services to the specialities of anaesthesia.
