Dr David Bickerton

Medical Director at Beacon Peninsula and Consultant Psychiatrist with Plymouth Community Healthcare (NHS Trust), Dr Bickerton supports forensic mental health services within the city of Plymouth and provides a generic adult mental health secondary care service. Previously GP between 1987 and 2001 with additional roles including Occupational Health Physician for Exeter Health Authority, Exeter City Council and Devon County Council, Visiting Medical Officer to Exeter and Charing Wood Prisons and Deputy Police Surgeon. Appointed by the Lord Chancellor’s Department as a member of appeal tribunals and worked with legal and lay representatives hearing DSS, DLA and incapacity cases. Incapacity Assessor for the DWP between 2002-2006. Approved under section 12 of the Mental Health Act and Deprivation of Liberty Medical Assessor. Dr Bickerton has experience of Home Office reporting under civil sections of MHA as well as Assessment and reporting to the GMC fitness to practice procedure. Experience as an Expert Witness in cases relating to psychological harm and medical negligence, he states a great interest in the ‘medical non-medical interface’ and aims to produce high quality evidenced-based, wide ranging medical and psychiatric reports in a timely manner.
