I am an Honorary Clinical Professor, at the University of Liverpool. I am a consultant Burns, Plastic and Laser Surgeon at the Mersey Regional Burns and Plastic Surgery Unit and hold a Masters degree in Law. I am the Clinical Lead for the Mersey Regional Burns Service at Whiston Hospital, and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal 'Scars, Burns, & Healing' which is the world’s only scar-focussed academic Journal. I am also Associate Editor of the Journal 'Annals of Plastic Surgery,' and former Chairman of The Katie Piper Foundation scar and burns charity. I was awarded the Hunterian Professorship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2007 and undertake a wide variety of expert witness work for defence and claimant, as well as joint instructions for clinical negligence and personal injury. I have written the following textbooks: Burns (Oxford Specialist Handbooks in Surgery, in press April 2019); FLAPS: Practical Reconstructive Surgery (Thieme 2017), Laser management of Scars (Springer-Nature 2020) and Multiple Choice Questions in Plastic Surgery (TFM 2009). I have published numerous book chapters including the medico-legal chapter in the Oxford Specialist Handbook of Post-Operative Complications 2nd edition published in 2010, and 100 academic journal articles.

I am on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council, and qualified as a doctor of medicine in 1999. I work in the NHS mostly in the Mersey Regional Burns and Plastic Surgery Service at Whiston hospital. I deal with a wide spectrum of acute and elective patients, including the severest of trauma and burns injuries from a wide catchment of 6 million as well as reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery. I also undertake regular paediatric work especially in the areas of general plastic surgery, skin lesions, ear surgery, lasers and scar management. I have a supra-regional NHS adult and children’s laser and scar practice taking referrals for laser and scar management from other burns and plastic surgery services nationally.
