I am a consultant Burns & Plastic Surgeon at the Mersey Regional Burns and Plastic Surgery Unit, Clinical Lead for the Mersey Regional Burns Service, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal Scars, Burns, & Healing, Associate Editor of the Journal Annals of Plastic Surgery, former Chairman and current Medical Director of The Katie Piper Foundation scar and burns charity. I am also the Clinical Director of Scar & Burns Rehabilitation at The Katie Piper Foundation. I am clinical lead for the Northern Burns Operation Delivery Network NHS England. I was awarded the Hunterian Professorship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2007 and obtained my Master of Law degree with commendation in 2005.

I have written the following textbooks: Burns (Oxford Specialist Handbooks in Surgery, in press April 2019); FLAPS: Practical Reconstructive Surgery (Thieme 2017), and Multiple Choice Questions in Plastic Surgery (TFM 2009). I have signed a contract with Springer-Nature to publish ‘Laser Management of Scars’. I have published numerous book chapters including the medico-legal chapter in the Oxford Specialist Handbook of Post-Operative Complications 2nd edition published in 2010.

I am on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council, and qualified as a doctor of medicine in 1999. I work in the NHS mostly in the Mersey Regional Burns and Plastic Surgery Service at Whiston hospital. I deal with a wide spectrum of acute and elective patients, including the severest of trauma and burns injuries from a wide catchment of 4.5 million as well as reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery ranging from skin cancer and lasers to breast surgery. I also undertake regular paediatric work especially in the areas of ear surgery and scar management. I have a supra-regional NHS adult and children’s laser and scar practice taking referrals for laser and scar management from other burns and plastic surgery services nationally.

I undertake private practice in a wide range of plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic procedures from a number of hospitals in the region, and have expertise in the area of scar treatments including national/quaternary referrals for treatment of scarring. I have written numerous book chapters in a wide range of areas related to plastic surgery ranging from cosmetic treatments and breast surgery to trauma and burns, skin cancer and beyond.
