Details

John Bowen is a Consultant Neonatal and Paediatric Surgeon at the Sheffield Children's Hospital; prior to taking up this post, Mr Bowen spent 26 years as a Consultant Neonatal and Paediatric Surgeon at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital.

He graduated from Leeds University in 1986 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1991, and obtained his Specialty Fellowship in 1996. He was appointed Consultant Surgeon to the Manchester Children’s Hospitals in 1996, providing Specialist Surgery for infants and children in Pendlebury, Booth Hall and St Mary’s Hospitals; and latterly in the new RMCH.

Mr Bowen has extensive experience of managing babies born with general neonatal surgical conditions, for example gastroschisis, oesophageal atresia, Hirschsprung’s disease, and the problems of prematurity. 

In the older child, he has extensive experience of the surgical management of inflammatory bowel disease, and has a long experience of managing the constipated child, which includes diagnosing and treating late-presenting Hirschsprung’s disease. 

He frequently manages babies, infants and children who require nutritional support, which might include performing gastrostomies or fundoplications. 

Vascular access procedures are a major component of the workload of a General Paediatric Surgeon; Mr Bowen performs over such procedures 50 per year.

Mr Bowen undertakes several Medico-Legal reports per year. These have included cases of personal injury, clinical negligence (Claimant and Defendant) and criminal or unexplained injury. He has attended Crown Court as an expert witness on behalf of the Prosecution and Defence.

Training

Approved Educational Supervisor for specialist Paediatric Surgical training. Also as been involved, in many capacities, with the University of Manchester. Has sat on the Paediatric Surgery Specialist Advisory Committee of the GMC. Has undertaken specialist training in preparing medico-legal reports.

Membership

Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Member of the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons (BAPS), and the British Society of Paediatric Gastro-Enterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (BSPGHN).
