Matt Clarke has over 25 years of experience in banking, notably working at Barclays Investment Bank (formerly Barclays Capital) for 14 years in senior credit risk positions.
Whilst at Barclays, Matt held the position of Regional Chief Credit Officer for European corporate clients. This involved chairing credit committees with a very high level of personal lending discretion and working on some major banking transactions across a full range of industry sectors across Europe. This gave Matt an understanding of the full spectrum of banking products, including both loans and derivatives.
Matt also worked in Barclays’ restructuring and recoveries team for five years. He regularly sat on Steering Committees, taking a lead role in negotiating a solution in complex situations where the borrower was in financial difficulty. This meant he was dealing directly with senior management of the client company (usually at CEO/CFO level), other bankers and professional advisers including lawyers and accountants. These projects usually lasted several months and the longest case he worked on took two years to resolve.
Some of the transactions that Matt worked on involved clients outside the UK, notably in France, Germany and Ireland. This meant dealing with people from different cultures and understanding local laws that vary.
