A Principal Consultant with Finch Consulting since 2016. with over 25 years experience in health and safety, with particular experience in heavy manufacturing (metals and paper), power generation (coal and gas), construction and logistics. Awarded a PhD for research into the efficacy of safety culture and behavioural safety programmes in industry. Regularly provides expert opinion, having acted for both prosecution and defence in criminal matters and defendant and claimant in civil matters. Holds the Cardiff University Bond Solon Certificates in both criminal and civil law. Provides consulting advice to a range of clients and advises on process safety issues – he is an experienced and qualified HAZOP chair and scribe. Always learning, Richard has a year left to complete his degree in demolition and has completed his Post Graduate Certificate in Process Engineering. He intends to continue to MSc level in process engineering over the next two years.
Three years in the power industry with both Centrica and GE advising on safety and environmental management on several gas fired power stations. Involved both in day to day advisory capacity and power station outage works. Provided a mix of process safety (gas pipeline, pressure systems etc) and occupational safety advice and support. Heavily involved in a culture change programme to change high risk outage work to a more inclusive safety approach.
Six years’ self -employed, providing specialist advice to a wide range of companies, including: RWEnPower; ThyssenKrupp; Tata steel; DS Smith Packaging; AAG Logistics. Provided consultancy advice as: CDM co-ordinator in the coal power station industry, construction, LNG, paper industry; HAZOP chair in the steel industry; project supervision and audit in many industries.
4 years as project safety advisor for Georgia Pacific Paper mills. This was to project manage the risk assessment and guarding of all the machinery within a large paper mill as a response to the new HSE guidance ‘Making Paper Safely’.
Experience of working in collaboration with HSE, Trade unions and Trade bodies. One such example was the co-authoring of ‘Rewinding Paper Safety’. Rewinders caused more fatal and serious accidents in the paper industry than any other piece of machinery.
Six years as Divisional Safety Manager for St Regis Paper Company which incorporated circa 2000 staff and covered 6 paper mills, 19 recycled depots and 14 logistics depots.
