Mike Roys is currently available for video conferencing.
Mike Roys is an Expert in understanding the risks associated with stairs, and other hazards in buildings.
Since leaving university in 1990, Mike worked with the Building Research Establishment (BRE) in Watford for 26 years. While there he developed his knowledge and expertise in building related hazards that could be detrimental to health. His understanding of building related risks has spanned many years, having been involved in the 1995 BRE Building Regulation and Safety report and the early development of the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS). At the end of his time at BRE he was involved in developing the Cost of Poor Housing models, which are now used to assess the cost benefit of removing hazards from homes.
In 2017, Mike started his own company "Rise and Going Consultancy" offering a professional and reliable consultation service in all matters relating to health, safety and wellbeing in buildings. Working as a consultant with RoSPA (the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) they have developed a publication entitled "Safer by Design - A framework to reduce serious accidental injury in new-build homes".
His particular specialist knowledge is in the risks associated with stairs, both in domestic and non-domestic settings. Mike conducted 15 years of research into stair design and safety working for the government department responsible for building regulation in England, and he has published extensively on the subject. He has also chaired the British Standards committee responsible for the development of the main stair standard BS 5395-1:2010 based on his research findings.
Mike is available for Expert Witness work involving falls on stairs, both domestic and non-domestic. Recent cases have involved; falls over a balustrade in student accomodation and within a supermarket staff area, a fall on a stair in a hotel, a fall on a tight domestic style stair with winders leading to short stay accomodation, and a ship's ladder aboard a navy vessel. Mike understands the elements of the stair that could be involved in increasing the risk of a fall on stairs, how to measure key dimensions and how to interperate available information to determine the most likely scenarios that could lead to injury.
Rise and Going Consultancy offers a professional and reliable consultation service in all matters relating to health, safety and wellbeing in buildings, with a particular emphasis on stairs and stair safety.
