Dr McCarthy did her medical training at the University of Cape Town and completed her radiology training in Oxford, UK. She undertook a fellowship in musculoskeletal radiology at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford.
Dr McCarthy currently works as a specialist Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist in Oxford with expertise in ultrasound, MRI, CT and image-guided interventional procedures. Her regular practice includes rheumatology, sports imaging, spine, trauma, bone infection, bone and soft tissue tumours and complex disorders of the musculoskeletal system. She regularly images elite sports players and is Regional Radiology Lead for the sarcoma, rheumatology and foot & ankle clinical-radiological services.
Dr McCarthy has published widely in international peer reviewed journals and written several book chapters in the field of musculoskeletal radiology. She is regularly invited to lecture at national and international conferences, including the International, European and British Skeletal Societies, and to peer review articles for a number of journals.
Dr McCarthy is an enthusiastic teacher and has been the supervisor for Oxford's musculoskeletal radiology training program for over 10 years. She is on the faculty of many educational courses and was involved in the integrated training initiative of the Royal College of Radiologists.

Dr McCarthy is a fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists and member of the South African, British, European and International Skeletal Societies and sits on the European subcommittees for musculoskeletal ultrasound and tumours.
