Mr. Alvan Pope

Mr Alvan Pope is a Consultant Urologist at the Hillingdon Hospitals NHSFT and also works at Bishops Wood Private Hospital, Northwood. He trained at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School in London, qualifying in 1980. He entered specialty training in urology in 1987 at the St Peters Group of Urological Hospitals, now part of UCH. He carried out research into bladder cancer at UCH, spent a year as a clinical fellow in Melbourne and was appointed as a consultant urologist at Hillingdon Hospital, with academic sessions at Charing Cross Hospital in 1995.  

He has been the lead clinician for cancer services at Hillingdon Hospital since 2000. He chaired the West London Network Urology Tumour Board from 2001-5.  He has been active in clinical management including clinical director for surgery and associate medical director until 2009. He has chaired the consultant staff committee and been a member of several regional groups.

His main area of interest is in urological cancer, especially in the diagnosis and management of prostate cancer. He has been a joint author on several recent papers in this field.  He is also an expert in the management of urological emergencies and stone disease

Mr Pope has been responsible for complaint handling at a Trust level previously and have been a member of several panels for Serious Untoward Incidents over the years. He has been involved in advising the Trust over their medicolegal claims in surgical specialties, supplied medicolegal reports over the years and has appeared in Court as an expert witness on two occasions.  

He has a longstanding interest in medico-legal issues but it is only since reducing his NHS sessions in 2022, that he has developed this practice. Mr Pope has undertaken specialist training completing Bond Solon courses on: Excellence in report writing and Discussions between experts. He has also attended two of the Annual Bond Solon Expert Witness Conferences.
