I am a consultant orthopaedic surgeon based in Bristol. I qualified from Imperial College London School of Medicine before undertaking my postgraduate surgical training in Oxford. After finishing my higher speciality training in trauma and orthopaedic surgery, I came to the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children to complete a post-certification fellowship and was appointed as a consultant in 2023.
My specialist practice is in knee conditions that affect children and adolescents. This includes knee pain and instability, sports injuries and lower limb deformities. With extensive experience treating young athletes and work closely with regional sports, dance and gymnastics academies. I’m also a regional ambassador for Power Up To Play helping to prevent knee injuries in youth sports.
Children’s knee conditions:
Knee pain is the most common musculoskeletal complaint of childhood and can be incredibly debilitating. It can affect schooling, independence, mental health, and self-image. It has a wide variety of causes and can be a sign of an underlying condition that, if not treated, can result in future disability.
Young people are specialising in higher-intensity sports from a young age like never before. There has also been a huge surge in the popularity of pivoting sports such as football and rugby, especially amongst young girls. This has resulted in a dramatic increase in the number of young athletes sustaining sports knee injuries.
Children require a different approach than adults. Not only are there the anatomical and physiological differences between growing bones and joints, but there are also social and emotional differences that vary throughout childhood and between individuals that anyone who has children will appreciate. Knee symptoms need not be debilitating, and sports knee injuries need not be career-ending for the young athlete.
I offer private consulting, surgery and expertise for under 18s with knee conditions, which include the following:
• Patellofemoral instability/pain
• Cruciate ligament ruptures
• Meniscal pathology (tears, instability)
• Knee pain and swelling
• Osteochondral/chondral defects/fractures
• Osteochondritis dissecans
• Rotational and alignment abnormalities
• Limb length inequality
