Dr Shilpi Mittal is a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at University Hospital of North Durham, she is also Associate Clinical Lecturer at Newcastle University.
She has been a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist since May 2015 in a district general hospital with annual deliveries of around 3200. Regularly hosting antenatal clinics where she attends to women with complex antenatal problems. Dr Mittal performs external cephalic versions for breech presentations and is one of the few consultants in the unit to perform cervical cerclage for cervical insufficiency. She has dedicated labour ward sessions on weekly basis, and these involve direct hands-on care for women in labour and supervision of Registrars in their work. Dr Mittal also provides care for women with a wide spectrum of high-risk obstetric conditions such as preterm birth, twins and perinatal infections.
Dr Mittal is currently Clinical Governance Lead for the obstetrics and Gynaecology and is responsible for the different governance areas including risk management within the department. She has been Labour ward lead for nearly three years in the past. Also leading maternal and perinatal morbidity/mortality meetings within the department and reviewing risk management cases within obstetrics, especially on intrapartum care and, involved at regional level in regional maternity patient safety network.

Dr Mittal has undertaken medico-legal work since 2021 when she provided with his first clinical negligence report for a claimant in June 2021. Since then, she has provided over 100 reports annually. Reports written for both claimants and Defendants in the ratio of 60:40. Dr Mittal provides clinical negligence reports on cases in both Obstetrics and Gynaecology on breach of duty, causation, condition and prognosis and screening reports. So far, she has authored over 600 reports including full as well as short form reports. Although no court experience yet, she has undertaken training in courtroom skills through Bond Solon and holds the Expert witness certificate in civil law.
Dr Mittal has published approximately 20 articles in various journals and have presented several times in national and international conferences. She is lead CTG training in her local hospital and part of simulation faculty in Obstetrics. Also regularly involved in creating and running simulation scenarios for multi-disciplinary obstetric teams.
