Consultant Urological Surgeon
MBBS MS FRCS (Urol)
East of England
• I am an NHS consultant with over 22 years experience in urology.
• Having qualified from the Middlesex Hospital Medical School in 1989, my first job as a junior doctor was in the urology department at the Middlesex Hospital - at the time one of the premier units in the world. My training in surgery was broad, with 2 years spent in clinical research in Oxford and 2 years in radiology. The latter allows me to offer what I believe to be a unique insight into the radiological aspects of medico-legal cases.
• I completed a formal endo-urology fellowship, which included time in the US training in complex surgery and have published widely in the international scientific literature, and continue to write feature articles for the urology press.
• I served as a medical officer in the Army Reserve (AR) for 22 years. I was promoted to lieutenant colonel at a young age and have experience as an adviser to the MOD on urological conditions. Having been selected for higher training at the Army Staff College, I passed out in the top third of all AR officers. My clinical experience includes the treatment of blast injury and ballistic trauma in Afghanistan. Assessing the impact of illness on occupation was an inherent part of my time in the British Army Reserve.
• My surgical and medico-legal practice covers both core and sub-specialist endo-urology, acting for both claimant and defendant in the UK and Ireland.
• As an education lead, I have won many awards for teaching undergraduates and surgical trainees.
• I am also a very experienced public speaker and have a parallel career as a military historian, published author and feature writer for well-known, high-circulation, international magazines.
