Mr Rory O'Connor is a Consultant in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery & Major Trauma based in Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham. He has special interest in treating post-traumatic facial deformities, which can range from scar management through to complex bone and soft tissue injuries that require bespoke treatment. This may include correcting the position of the bone (an osteotomy) or using custom made implants, but he makes sure to focus on what is important for the person rather than just concentrating on the injury.
He provides the full range of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, which includes looking after people that require tooth extraction (including wisdom teeth), have lesions in or around the mouth that might require removal, salivary stones and other jaw and face related problems. He regularly sees people with facial pain, mouth ulcers, lichen planus (characterised by red or white patches in the lining of the mouth) and other conditions related to Oral Medicine. He sees children that may need to have teeth removed or exposed for Orthodontic or other reasons and those with tongue ties.
For complex craniofacial deformities secondary to trauma (or other causes), he utilises the latest technology in 3D planning, 3D modelling and virtual surgery to provide the best outcome for patients.
He was appointed as a consultant at Nottingham University Hospitals in January 2021 after completing my specialist training in the East Midlands, and then undertook a nationally appointed TIG (Training Interface Group) Fellowship in Major Trauma from 2019 to 2020 followed by an AO International CranioMaxilloFacial Surgery Fellowship in Basel, Switzerland, also in 2020.
He has been accepting Medico-Legal instructions since 2022 for condition and prognosis reports and clinical negligence in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, with a subspecialist interest in facial trauma and post traumatic facial deformity. As a Major Trauma consultant, he is able provide an opinion on how the facial injury fits in the context of the patient with multiple injuries.
