Mr Simon Bennet is a Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon based at University Hospitals Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, a recognised Paediatric Major Trauma Centre. His clinical practice is entirely dedicated to paediatric orthopaedics, and he provides independent expert opinion in clinical negligence and personal injury cases involving children.
He has extensive experience in the preparation of CPR Part 35 compliant medico-legal reports, acting for both claimant and defendant, and is regularly instructed on matters relating to breach of duty, causation, condition and prognosis, and future orthopaedic needs.
Mr Bennet’s clinical expertise covers the full spectrum of paediatric orthopaedic conditions, including:
Paediatric trauma and fracture management
Growth plate injuries, growth disturbance and sequelae of infection
Hip disorders, including slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE)
Limb length discrepancy and limb deformity
Neuromuscular conditions, including cerebral palsy
Congenital limb disorders, including clubfoot (CTEV)
He has specific clinical and medico-legal experience in birth injury cases, including cerebral palsy and obstetric brachial plexus palsy, and is experienced in assessing long-term musculoskeletal consequences, functional impairment, and future treatment requirements.
He is comfortable with all aspects of expert witness work, including joint statements, experts’ meetings, and conferences with Counsel, and understands that his primary duty is to the Court.
Mr Bennet trained in orthopaedic surgery in Bristol and Sydney, having graduated from Edinburgh Medical School, and holds subspecialist interests in congenital limb deformity and neuromuscular orthopaedics.
