Details

Josh Patch is a UK-based Consultant Anaesthetist with extensive experience across general, regional and obstetric anaesthesia, peri-operative medicine, airway management, and acute pain. He provides independent, balanced, and court-compliant expert opinion in cases involving alleged breaches of duty, causation, and standard of care in anaesthetic practice with a short turn around time.

Dr Patch holds a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Anaesthetics, is a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA), and is on the GMC Specialist Register. He is currently a substantive Consultant Anaesthetist at North Bristol NHS Trust, with additional private practice experience at Spire and Nuffield hospitals.

He has broad clinical experience across district general and tertiary centres, managing both routine and complex cases, including high-risk surgical patients. His areas of specialist expertise include:

  • General and regional anaesthesia

  • Airway assessment and management, including difficult airway cases

  • Peri-operative assessment and optimisation

  • Obstetric anaesthesia

  • Acute pain management

  • Trauma and emergency anaesthesia

  • Consent, communication, and peri-operative decision-making

Dr Patch is Airway Lead within his department, responsible for airway governance, equipment evaluation, and training, and regularly delivers structured airway teaching and simulation. This role provides him with up-to-date familiarity with national guidance, human factors, and systems-based approaches to patient safety.

He has significant experience in clinical research, audit, and guideline development. He is currently supervising local investigator teams conducting two large national anaesthetic studies, alongside ongoing involvement in multicentre research and quality improvement initiatives. He has previously served as Associate Principal Investigator on multiple nationwide studies and has held leadership roles within regional and national trainee research networks. This sustained engagement with research enables him to place individual cases within the context of contemporary evidence, accepted standards of care, and evolving national guidance.

A major focus of both his specialist training and consultant practice has been within the field of regional anaesthesia, including the use of ultrasound-guided nerve blocks and regional techniques for peri-operative analgesia and anaesthesia. He has extensive hands-on experience, has led regional anaesthesia teaching and service development, and has contributed to guideline creation and quality improvement in this area. This provides particular strength in cases involving regional techniques, consent, complications, and peri-operative pain management.

Dr Patch has completed formal training in expert witness report writing and is familiar with the requirements of the Civil Procedure Rules (Part 35), the duties of an expert witness, and the importance of independence and clarity. His reports are clear, well-structured, and focused on the key medico-legal issues, and he is able to explain complex anaesthetic concepts in a way that is accessible to solicitors, counsel, and the court.

He accepts instructions from claimant and defendant solicitors and is available for:

  • Screening and advisory opinions

  • CPR-compliant liability and causation reports

  • Joint statements

  • Conference with counsel

  • Court attendance if required
