I have 35 years of experience in the construction industry, including work both on-site and the design office, and covering a wide variety of disciplines, ranging from site investigation and ground remediation to the detailed structural design of very large buildings and in roles ranging from Graduate Engineer to Company Director.
My endeavours have covered both public and private sector work, and have included: large public buildings; signature architecture; historic buildings; engineering for artworks, industrial structures and a significant body of work on temporary and demountable structures, together with numerous special projects, typically in steel and concrete, plus a large volume of everyday engineering that typically forms the workload of UK practices.
I established Applied Engineering Design (AED) Limited as a sole practitioner in 2008 and ultimately grew the firm to comprise three offices and twelve staff. I now work as a sole practitioner again, which I am finding very enjoyable. Among other awards, my projects at AED won a RIBA Award in 2016 and were shortlisted for the Structural Awards in 2018.
I have previously served on the Research Panel of the IStructE and the Board of Glasgow Sculpture Studios. I current serve on the Sustainability Panel of the IStructE.
