Mr. Kurt Spiteri Cornish

Mr Kurt Spiteri Cornish MD FRCOphth MSc is a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon with extensive experience in complex retinal and cataract surgery. He has undertaken medico-legal work since 2017, providing expert opinion on breach of duty, causation, condition and prognosis, with a high-volume practice encompassing both claimant and defendant instructions.

He undertakes approximately 150–200 medico-legal reports, supplementary opinions and conferences annually. His particular areas of expertise include vitreo-retinal surgery, retinal detachment, cataracts/lens surgeries and complications of cataract surgery, ocular trauma, medical retina and general ophthalmology.

Reports are typically issued within 14 days, subject to receipt of the necessary records and the complexity of the instruction.

• Cataract surgery, including complex cases and surgical complications

• Ocular trauma

• Medical retina, including age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy

• General ophthalmology

Mr Spiteri Cornish holds the Cardiff University Bond Solon Civil Expert Witness Certificate, has completed Bond Solon Criminal Expert Witness training, and is a member of The Academy of Experts. He maintains dedicated annual expert-witness training and continuing professional development; and medico-legal indemnity is provided by MDU. He has also served as a GMC expert witness since 2017 and has experience giving oral expert evidence at GMC tribunals.

Alongside his clinical practice, he is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield, Clinical Governance Lead for Ophthalmology at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and an FRCOphth Examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
